Miki : Where were you, Jane? We were looking for you.
Jane : Oh, I’m sorry. I just went to the rest room.
Miki : That’s OK. Was it easy to find the rest room? You don’t speak or read Japanese yet.
Jane : Well, it was easy to find because I saw the rest room sign with a man and a woman on it.
Miki : Oh, do you use the same sign in the UK?
Jane : Yes, we do.
Father : Do you know that sign was first made in Japan? It was first used at the Tokyo Olympics in 1964. That year, many people came to Japan from all over the world and they couldn’t read Japanese. So, a lot of signs were used at that time.
Miki : Wow, I didn’t know that it was made in Japan first.
Father : Jane, look at the green sign over there. A picture of a man running through the gate.
Jane : I know what that sign means. It means an emergency exit, right? We use the same sign in our country, too.
Father : Yes. That was also made in Japan first, and now it is used in a lot of countries.
Jane : That’s interesting. Let’s find another sign. Look at that mobile phone sign. That means “Don’t use mobile phones here.”
Father : That’s right. A circle with a line through it means “Don’t do it.”
Miki : I also found another sign on the door of that book shop. That means “Don’t eat or drink here.”
Jane : Why don’t you use a rice ball and a cup of tea?
Father : That may be a good idea only in Japan. The good thing about signs is that anyone, for example, people from ( ③ ) countries and children, can understand them easily. So, I think that sign, a hamburger and a cup, is better.
Miki : Signs are very useful. We can communicate with each other without using any ( ④ ) like Japanese or English.
(3) 本文中の ( ③ ) , ( ④ ) に適切な英語一語を入れて英文を完成させなさい。なお、( ③ ) は小文字の ” f ” , ( ④ ) は小文字の ” l ” で書き始めること。
